At charter elementary school, in Gainesville, Georgia, “Changing the definition of smart needed to happen for a long time,” says fourth-grade teacher Audrey Thornton. “Gardner’s principle was written to build in flexibility. In order to motivate and teach a child, you have to find out where their strengths are and what they’re passionate about, and use that to move them in the direction of learning new skills.”
The groundswell of community support for the school helped create and maintain what is now the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse school in the district, with consistently some of the highest test scores — and very little teacher or student attrition.
